IND celebrates Earth Day by going meat free
In celebration of the 40th Annual Earth Day, IND students, faculty and staff went "meat free" Thursday, April 22. The Shalom Club promoted the day and sold vegetarian lunches from Whole Foods.

Members of the Shalom Club (Jessica Covington '11, Claire Harryman '11, Sarah Walczak '11 and Stephanie Carnucci '11) serve meat-free lunches from Whole Foods in reusable bags.
The club also hosted Aaron Ross and Kate St. John from the Animal Awareness Project to speak with students and distribute information about how a plant-based diet actually helps preserve the environment.
During a General Assembly for the entire school community, Mr. Ross explained that choosing vegetarian alternatives not only helps reduce the pollution that the animal-based food industry produces but also helps prevent cruelty to animals, making a plant-based diet a compassionate choice.

Robotics Club triumphantly returns to Hopkins Robo-Challenge
Two teams from IND, including members of the Robotics Club, entered the Johns Hopkins University Robo-Challenge Saturday, April 17.
The Robo-Challenge is a robot competition for high school and middle school students sponsored by Johns Hopkins University. There are five competitions - Petite Slalom, Mystery Course, Innovative Use of BOE kits, Tumor Detection and Robot Dance. Students build the robot before the competition and on the day of the competition students need to be able to program them based on the obstacle course that day. The general layout of the course is given to students before hand, but the actual path is unknown and changes.
The first team included Alison Friedlander '12, Ester Paolocci '12 and Marylynne Sitko '12; second team was Emily Pitt '11, Jocelyn Stenhouse '11, and Da’Neal Knight-McCoy '11. After placing third last year in the Petite Slalom Category, Alison, Ester and Marylynne returned determined to win first place in that category and they were successful. They also placed first in Robot Dance and second in Search and Destroy. Click here for a complete list of winners.
The IND Robotics Club was launched this school year and is moderated by Math Faculty Mrs. Diane Newcomer.
