About IND

Welcome from the Head of School

Welcome from the Head of School!

Welcome to the Institute of Notre Dame! IND is an independent, all girls, Catholic high school located in the heart of Baltimore. This year, IND is entering its 173rd year. Founded in 1847 by the School Sisters of Notre Dame, IND has a rich history of educating and empowering young women. IND has been described as ‘sacred ground’ among the School Sisters, alumnae, students and faculty because our location on Aisquith Street is the original site of the school that Mother Theresa of Jesus Gerhardinger opened when she arrived from Germany all those years ago.

Through the years, IND has continued the legacy of its foundress by educating young women through the Catholic faith. We have withstood the test of time. Thousands of women have been educated, empowered and given the opportunity to experience IND.

The school has been described as the ‘historic jewel’ of Baltimore. It is indeed a special place for girls to learn, grow and build confidence in themselves and their abilities. The IND faculty is comprised of highly qualified teachers. These educators are energized by the joy and love of teaching young women. They are dedicated to honoring each of their students as individuals and are committed to understanding how each of their students learns best. Our student body is made up of a diverse group of girls who are eager to be heard in the classroom, challenged on the athletic field or stage, and strive to be good stewards of the community around them.

I hope our website proves informative and helpful and that you can gain a better sense of what kind of school the Institute of Notre Dame is. However, to truly understand how special IND is, I encourage you to come to campus and visit. Come see our teachers and girls in action and see why IND Is Where You Belong!
